The Ritz Carlton Abama, Tenerife
The Abama in Tenerife is somewhere I have sold well for many years but not had the opportunity to visit until now. I wondered if it would live up to my expectations and the consistently good feedback I had from clients I have sent.
It did not live up to my expectations; it completely exceeded them, as it was absolutely fantastic and far more personal than I had imagined possible in such a resort.
It is a very special property as it manages to make a large spacious hotel feel intimate and certainly down in the villas, it almost feels like a small boutique hotel. The combination of family pool, main pool and adults only pool and areas meant everyone was able to find their spot and relax with peace and quiet or with excited toddlers.
There is too much to mention in detail in terms of what impressed me about the place but in brief:
The staff – Rarely have I ever come across such an amazing, friendly, efficient team. Every time you walked into a restaurant you were greeted immediately with smiles and the care and attention by the pool was just amazing. No hunting for a towel here, within a flash a member of staff was there saying hello, where would you like to sit, would you like more shade, can I get you a drink? This wasn’t just for us on a work trip. I watched every client being treated the same way.
The food – From the Tapas to the Michelin starred options this is food of the highest quality. We were spoilt for choice on our short visit but for clients staying longer the number of restaurants is fantastic. Even the simple avocado and local tomato salad at lunchtime was incredible. The wine was also delicious and very reasonable for a hotel.
The rooms – We stayed in the Tagor Villas, which are adult only and absolutely stunning. Everything you would expect from a Ritz Carlton but relaxed and perfect for a resort. The options to interconnect in the main Citadel make the resort perfect for families and the one bed suite with separate lounge was enormous and again ideal for younger families. The top-level suites were as good as any I have seen and combined with the levels of service experienced it would suit any client looking for exclusivity.
The beach is small but perfectly formed with lovely safe sandy swimming for children and natural rock pools to explore. The restaurant by the beach is just right again with a relaxed atmosphere but smart, efficient service.
There is a kids club, a spa, great tennis and a challenging golf course to keep everyone occupied.
When you arrive, the property looks big and the colour is vivid against the blue sky and sea. When you have been there a day you stop seeing the hotel and see the pools, the amazing staff and happy guests and it suddenly feels small and very personal. I loved it and am looking forward to sending my clients there.
